Seven thousand one hundred and sixty nine (7,169) primary and junior secondary schools teachers in Borno State have so far been trained by the United State Agency for International Development following a request by Governor Kashim Shettima whose administration is engaged in massive building of modern schools and remodeling of existing across Borno State. Many of the school projects have been completed with some at various levels while work remains very active.
The intervention by USAID came through the Agency’s Education Crisis Response Project (ECR) led by the Project’s Director, Ayo Oladini who visited Governor Shettima on Thursday to give update on successes so far recorded by his team in complementing the efforts of the State Government.
The Governor met the USAID team in his office at the Government House in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State with participation by the Nigerian Union of Teachers which was represented by the NUT’s Deputy chairman.
Shettima was told during the meeting, that the USAID-Education Crisis Response project has concluded the training of 7,169 primary school teachers on healing classroom and pupils-centered teaching methodologies in five project local government areas of Borno State: Biu, Jere, Kaga, Konduga and Maiduguri Metropolitan council. Borno’s Commissioner for Education, Musa Inuwa Kubo and other officials of the State Government who monitored implementation attended the meeting.
Shettima had requested the US Agency to support in the training of teachers As part of his administration’s manpower drive to match the establishment of new schools. The Government plans to recruit new teachers with training of both new and old teachers topping a renewed priority.
“The USAID project in Borno State has so far enrolled 15,197 out of school IDPs children/youth accessing basic education in 304 project-supported non-formal learning centres, trained 7,169 primary school teachers in the five focal on providing education in conflict and crisis environment.”
“So also, the project engaged 30 Local Government education authority officials as mentor teachers to improve the quality of infrastructural delivery through coaching and mentoring of the teachers (learning facilitators), trained, and depoloyed 130 monitoring facilitators to use CreativeMapper for data collection and management of 304 learning centres.” visiting officials told Governor Shettima.
The Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is adopting some aspects in USAID’s training manual in order to cover more teachers primary school teachers in conflict locations who weren’t reached by the project in other.
Giving overview, Governor Shettima was reminded that the Education Crisis Response project is a three year United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded project implemented in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and Yobe States, currently providing basic literacy program for 47,722 children and youth across Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and Yobe states began on October 4, 2016.
The figure comprises of 37,069 children/youth enrolled in 731 non-formal learning centers and 10,653 learners in formal schools in the project states, USAID project officials explained.
Governor Shettima was happy his request was implemented and looks forward to more partnership on the area developing the capacity of teachers to correspond with his administration’s visible massive infrastructures on basic education.
